Links with the Community
Saint Ronan’s believes strongly in fostering positive links with the local community, not just in the hope of benefiting some of those in the local area but also allowing our pupils to socialise, work and be motivated by those outside of our school. At present we have established a close link with Sandhurst Primary School, which includes weekly sports coaching sessions and participation in Art lessons. The regularity of these visits within the school calendar allows a clear programme of study to be developed, whilst all pupils are able to forge friendships with children from another school; something not possible at a ‘one-off’ meeting.
Others links include termly visits to local care homes where pupils are encouraged to chat to the residents, perform in short musical concerts and help with some practical tasks for instance, gardening. Residents are also invited, termly, to any performances we may be giving. Pupils also deliver, in person, the produce from our Harvest Festival. In order to promote a greater understanding of the care homes, one of the managers comes to Saint Ronan’s annually in order to talk to the children about the benefits of their contribution for their residents.
Saint Ronan’s has a member of staff dedicated to improving the existing links, and establishing new relationships, with the local community. This includes direct involvement in a committee of the parish council established to bring local primary schools together in community wide events, such as sports fixtures, photography competitions, film festivals and book studies.
