Prospectus - Art

We aim to provide children with an understanding of a variety of painting and drawing techniques and the creation of three-dimensional forms. They learn about artists from different periods and the creative approaches and techniques used in their work.

After each introduction, the children are encouraged to experiment with these techniques so that they learn both how to use a range of artist’s materials and to express their own ideas through them.

A particularly popular event during the year is a trip to Dulwich Picture Gallery to hear stories about the works displayed there and to learn how different colours of paint were made in the past.

For the Pre-Prep children, we encourage them to keep a sketchbook, make simple drawings from objects, experiment with colour mixing and try a number of different techniques.

We run art clubs for Years 3-6 so that those who are particularly keen can explore both two- and three-dimensional projects in more depth. There are pottery classes for those who want to experiment with clay modelling.  In Years 7-8, there is the Masterclass group aimed at pupils who are really enthusiastic, including some who wish to apply for art scholarships at senior schools.

For all ages, we want the experience to be stimulating, enjoyable and challenging.
