Sport at Saint Ronan’s is all about fun and enjoyment. We strive to get the balance right with our all-inclusive programme focusing on both excellence and participation, providing opportunities for all pupils.
Our comprehensive games programme and match afternoons are complimented by a varied PE curriculum which allows all pupils to experience and enjoy a variety of activities. Inter-house and inter-school matches allow the children to demonstrate their skills in a more competitive environment and each year we have a number of pupils (both boys and girls) that go onto to represent their district or county at their chosen sport.
Pupils in the Prep school have three games session’s each week and the sports taught at this time are football, netball, hockey, lacrosse, rugby, cross country, cricket, rounders and athletics. Each pupil also receives 2 (year 3-5) and 1 (year 6-8) PE lessons which focus on fitness training, gymnastics, basketball, badminton and swimming. Other activities such as fencing, mountain biking, table tennis and judo can be accessed via the extra-curricular programme.
In the Pre-Prep all pupils from reception to Year 2 receive specialist PE teaching which is developing the core components of sport such as agility, co-ordination and balance for example. This leads to an introduction of the major games played in the Prep school.
We are fortunate to have beautiful grounds which are carefully prepared for all the major games providing a wonderful setting to train and play matches. A sports hall, astro pitch, netball courts and outdoor swimming pool complete the impressive facilities on offer.
The school common room provides experienced PE teachers and sports coaches who all understand the ethos of prep school sport and allow the school to run many teams throughout all the age groups.
Talented pupils are identified and are encouraged to pursue their chosen sport(s) at local clubs or are put forward into district or county trials. Pupils who wish to pursue sports scholarships are given advice and coaching where necessary to enhance their application.

Saint Ronan’s grass pitches are set in magnificent grounds and they are adapted throughout the year to reflect the sports on offer. To compliment these there is an astro, sports hall, netball courts and a swimming pool. In addition, there are mountain bike trails through the woods, a fishing lake and three golf holes to practice chipping and putting.

Fixtures are an exciting part of the week and they take place on Wednesday (U13-U10) and Thursday (U9-U8) afternoons. The matches reflect the major games that are being taught at the time. In addition to these the school also enters a number of tournaments, within all the sports, while Cross country running events are held though out the autumn and spring term. Swimming and athletics take place during the summer while there are also fencing matches throughout the year.
