Design and Technology at Saint Ronan’s offers access to many creative and exciting opportunities. Pupils can get involved in events such as the Greenpower goblin electric car races or build incredible robots with the Vex IQ robotic kits.
They will learn to use Computer Aided Design CAD from year 3 onwards and use this to produce imaginative designs which they can then cut out on our 1200 x 900 laser cutter.
Children have designed and made rocket cars, clocks, iPod docks, Alice in Wonderland croquet sets as well as making beautiful hand turned pens on the wood turning lathe. They also use desk top publishing to design their own Top Trump cards and patterns which they dye sublimate onto a mug.
We have even had children design and make a Toylander Landrover and trailer painted and finished up as a baby Boris. Under Chris Woodyer’s guidance pupils as young as year 4 are helping to construct components for the 7/8 scale Fokker Eindecker that we are building in collaboration with Sutton Valence School. This is an incredible project and we have the fuselage frame on its wheels with the tail plane in place ready for seating, controls and instrumentation to be fitted prior to covering and uniting it with the wings being made at SVS.
